I've always believed that one of the best things about Nina's voice was that she didn't train for years and years to be a singer as she did to be a pianist, so when it came time for her to (unexpectedly) sing, she simply opened her mouth and let the music flow out of her. This creates a much more natural, earthy, and "real" sounding voice that - to me - makes it all that more emotive and impactful.
