Hello,

My name is Wim van Asveldt and I am from the Netherlands.
I am a fan from Dr. Simone since 1968 when I heart her for the first time with the song Ain' t got no - I got life. It became a number one hit in the Netherlands. Since that time I try to buy every recording she has ever made and I can say now I got almost everything.

The day I got to see Nina Simone live at the Chicago theatre was the best day of my entire life. I'm 38 years old bed in love with her since I was 10. The love just increases day-by-day.

She was wearing a green sequence (sp?) Dress... had a few folks help her walk to piano. Only played about 8... maybe 10 songs. It must have been about 2001 or 2002. My momma, sis and 4 yes old niece enjoyed the show.
I almost died the day I saw Nina passed. She is my world. My queen. My release. Ugh.

Two of my most vivid memories from the concert (other than Nina's performance itself) are of a woman rushing up to the stage while Nina was standing at the front of the stage . She reached up to Nina and Nina bent down and kind of shook the woman's hand. Security quickly came out and shooed the woman away but I could see her walking back up the aisle to her seat just staring at her own hand as if in disbelief that she had actually touched Nina Simone. I clearly remember thinking that I completely understood and I would have also been in disbelief if I had touched Nina as well.

The other memory is Nina asking us in the audience what song we wanted her to perform. A lot of people shouted their requests and when there was a lull in shouts I very loudly yelled "Be My Husband!!!!" to which Nina gave a kind of "ohhhhhhh" and a chuckle, which at the time I took as her indicating that she wasn't up to doing that song (no piano playing, heavy on the percussion...I think it would've been difficult to perform on a whim for her at her age at the time). Now I'm not even sure if she was actually responding to my request but at the time I was over the moon believing that she had not only heard me but had responded to me.

I almost died the day I saw Nina passed. She is my world. My queen. My release. Ugh.

When Jerry Garcia died I was working in a restaurant in St. Louis (Duff's) where the owners and cooks were HUGE Grateful Dead fans (one of the cooks also toured with them at one point and cooked for them), so the day he died the restaurant closed and I remember being confused that they'd actually close for that reason but the day Nina died I missed work and laid in bed all day and cried and then I most definitely understood. It's the only time I've cried for someone that I didn't actually know.
